célia regina cruz recorded four self-titled albums for continental between 1971 and 1977, �amor� in 1982 plus several more before she sadly passed away late in 2017. célia was a brazilian vocalist who worked frequently with master arranger-composer arthur verocai in her early years and many other heavyweights over the course of her extensive career.. this, her second self-titled lp from 1972, features an all-star line up including arthur verocai, erasmo carlos, roberto carlos, marcos valle, antonio carlos jobim, nonato buzar and vinicius de moraes amongst others. célia�s version of �na boca do sol� � taken from this album � is arguably her most well-known and well-loved song. an incredible take on verocai�s original, featuring waling fuzz guitars, strings, piano, horns and drums.

thoma bulwer returns with jandaze , his latest ep via parasol culture featuring long-time partner in crime anna wall. it follows parasol 001 their first joint vinyl release, that sold out on the shelves gaining support from the likes of mood ii swing and cab drivers plus on the airwaves via nts. their jandaze ep has already been doing the rounds on the dj circuit in hackney wick and beyond. �patience� was the result of a late night jam session with sync boxes, groove benders and the classic tr-909. after much fine-tuning, it�s been tried and tested by cinthie on her recent australia tour and is set to be a staple club cut for this summer. although �insouciant� means a casual lack of concert, a lot of work went into making this one. it�s the most laid-back of the bunch, with smallville-esque juno 106 melodies perfect for the afterparty or warm up session. this goes out to the post-nyd loft party crew in the wick where it was played for the first time. try pronouncing this one at 7am in the morning� �fridge speed� is a minimal house cut influenced by thoma�s garage roots. think rudely placed analogue synth stab melodies, �tuff� skippy drums and big subs ideal for early hours and �it�s a london thing� house sets. �egress� was made with long jam takes from thoma�s modular system. deep, dubby beats, evolving synths and textures make up this track thats been road-tested on the world famous fabric room 1 sound system by voigtmann in his extended set before ricardo villalobos. current support comes from maya jane coles, archie hamilton franck, roger, cinthie, voigtmann, john dimas.

field of dreams are field theorys chris kentish and dj al mackenzie. field theory have recently had tracks on respected labels such as futureboogie and secret life gaining rave reviews and even garnering plays on bbc radio 6 music. al has been a dj since the late 80s, now resident at birminghams great outdoors. he s made numerous records over the years but will probably be remembered primarily for his 90s band d:ream making number one all over the world and remixing for emf and duran duran amongst others. bumping into each other in the street one dayand realising they lived opposite each other, they seized upon the chance to combine their favourite passions, making music and drinking.

the mythical liquid pegasus returns - this time on clandestine boogie, firmly setting out his stall as one of the best around when it comes to modern synth boogie. �makin it hot opens up proceedings, synth stabs and squelchy basslines a plenty, married with layers of intricate melodies and a vocoder transported straight from the 80 s. matt hughes takes on remix duties converting that squelchy bass synth into a more straight up funk bass guitar, adding shuffling high hats and weaving in a little jazz flute for added effect. on the flip side it s prime low rider cruising courtesy of sparkle combining a full-bodied bass, cosmic pads and woozy synth flurries to create a soundtrack perfect for late night coasting. to close out the e.p. dave allison adds his own sparkle to the track, upping the tempo, adding a range of hazy arps and sweeping synthesis alongside a perfectly executed bass breakdown, taking sparkle from midnight cruiser to boogie bomb.

after putting out kito jempere s well received sea monsters album last year, hell yeah now serve up another selection of remixes of it. accomplished musician jimi tenor, plus miskotom and max essa all contribute before a 7inch, also taken from the album, lands later in summer. first up is jimi tenor, the legndary finnish musician who has released on warp, collaborated with tony allen and has his own band as well as occasionally playing sax with kito jempere band at live gigs. he flips puzzled into five minutes of stripped back and moody electronics with plenty of his own flute playing in the track. busted drum sounds, spooky sci-fi synths and scattered hits make it woozy and late night and utterly absorbing. miskotom�a newly emerging pair made up of mik and his wife andra, both based in vilnius, lithuania with credits on pleasure unit and balearic �then reimagine ampa as a beatdown but of deep house with trudging drums staying low and shimmering synths drift out in all directions. crunchy hits bring a subtle sense of funk and reverb drenched vocals bring a heavenly feel to the soul drenched grooves and summery keys. then comes max essa, the japan based brit who is a regular on this label as well as the likes of is it balearic?. his first remix is a huge one that is sure to soundtrack many a boat party this summer. it s a gorgeous rework of ampa that puts achingly blissful vocals front and centre as low slung bass and slowly turning drums sink you into a pan-pipe laced reverie. secondly, essa offers a dub reprise that removes the vocals and places all the focus on his churning drums and new age grooves. this is another perfect package of masterfully electronic horizontal sounds.

the saqqara ep is a multilayered, sonic canvas from the mind of chris barratt, as he launches his new alias, baratt, for life and death. fine brushstrokes move from all areas of his musical hideout, spreading over five, varied, aural sculptures, each one warping and weaving on its own cosmic trajectory. pooling from key aspects of his eagles & butterflies project, barratt induces new musical shades, hinting at moments of disco and funk, through a lens of psychedelia. the title track is a late-night floor-filler - a bold yet uniquely personal necropolis built from riveting delays and arpeggiators. time bending sees dj tennis join in, stepping up with his trademark, rough around the edges production aesthetic, en route to unknown destinations. barratt hones-in on a confident, stripped-down style on khaos - rhythm versus melody just in time for festival season. 1983 soundtracks a ride to utopia on a rocket-fueled vespa, leading to collider, the land of un-quantised madness, where the most treasured of synthesisers live amongst their drum machine counterparts. flowing yet incredibly interconnected, saqqara is best interpreted as a mini artist album - the first of many barratt offerings.

word of advice to funk lovers, there is not a minute to lose. get on board of the big hustle�s spaceship. before we take off, let s do a little history. the band was founded in 2014 by bass player and composer sébastien levanneur and its aim is to bring together 70 s old school funk with the hippest actual sound laced with influences spanning from steely dan and headhunters, to snarky puppy and soulive. with mighty horn players, a rock and funky rhythm section, the big hustle s music has a very large variety of soundscapes. the first destination takes us to the washington, d.c. area with �turn up�. the groove is clearly go-go music flavored with the trademark sound of cowbells and of course it reminds us of zapp by the use of the talk box on lead vocals, performed here by saad el garrab. and don t miss out shaun martin (snarky puppy, erykah badu, kirk franklin amongst others) as a very special guest performing the talk box solo! second stop is �a curse, a blessing�. it�s an instrumental very much in the freddie hubbard vein during his cti years. the last leg of the a side ends with an instrumental interlude titled �flying donut�. double tribute to jay dee and flying lotus, the music is a simple hip hop loop based on samples. the b side takes us back into the past with two brilliant covers, involving rod temperton the late great british songwriter who scored some of michael jackson s biggest hits. now the idea for this b side is to do the opposite approach from the a side. taking 70 s and 80 s original music and make them travel into time to 2018. we first land with a heatwave song named �the star of a story� from their 1976 central heating album. track 2 is a herbie hancock song named �gettin to the good part� from his 1982 lite me up lp. this time traveler ep journey ends with an interlude. called �gimme dat�, the song deals with the need of new music, new sound. again, this blend of deep rooted funk laced with a contemporary edge is to be consumed without moderation. and do not forget that e.p. also stands for extended pleasure.

eshu, the production collective and record label from nijmegen are back with their next offering. their 12th release is a various artists release that features blm, joburg and steven siwalette alongside label members ivano tetelepta and jocelyn abell. it comes on the heels of teteleptas absorbing dub techno album, senang, and is another high class offering. nijmegen based siwalette is first, previously contributed to the label as part of sys. his stragglers is a sparse but atmospheric track with industrial drones and slowly turning drums taking you through a desolate factory late at night. his second offering is alien encounter which is just as it sounds - a spooky, unsettling bit of cinematic sound design with menacing bass and icy pads all growing in loudness until they eventually consume your mind. lastly on the a-side, uk producer and fear of flying label boss blm lays down a skeletal groove thats embellished with beautiful, yawning synths. scattered little details and fx making this a cavernous piece that encourages your mind to wander and get lost. on the flip, jocelyn abell and ivano tetelepta cook up a heavyweight, mid tempo bit of dub techno with sharp hits and rolling kicks lulling you into a trance. last of all, the emerging j?burg picks up the pace with a perfectly chiselled bit of rock solid dub with looping drums and icy hi hats sinking you deep into its midst. this is an excellent ep that packs in a range of fascinating sounds for both the home and the club.
